Suspected Killer of UCU Dean of Students Remanded

A 21-year-old man, Hussain Taekaiko, has been remanded to prison after being arraigned on charges of murder and theft in the killing of Pamella Tumwebaze, a former lecturer at Uganda Christian University (UCU).

Taekaiko appeared on Friday before Mukono Grade One Magistrate William Muwonge, escorted under tight security by officers from the Joint Anti-Terrorism (JAT) unit.

The prosecution alleges that on February 11, 2026, at Gwafu Cell in Goma Division, Mukono Municipality, Taekaiko unlawfully caused the death of Tumwebaze at her residence. It is further claimed that he stole a laptop, a Samsung Galaxy mobile phone, a briefcase, and foreign currencies from Botswana, Kenya, and Ghana.

The charges were read in accordance with Sections 171 and 172 (murder) and Sections 266 and 267 (theft) of the Penal Code Act. Taekaiko was not allowed to enter a plea, as the Magistrate’s Court does not have jurisdiction to try capital offences.

State Prosecutor Emilly Ninsiima requested additional time for police to complete investigations. Magistrate Muwonge remanded Taekaiko until March 19, 2026, when the case will return for mention.

Police confirmed that the accused was previously taken to the crime scene in Gwafu Village, where he reportedly demonstrated how he allegedly broke into Tumwebaze’s home and carried out the attack.
